The original Dutch Tanks were possibly mostly Low Tech, they are cheaper to set up and maintain particularly if there are budget concerns.

You are correct Keith based on the original nbat rules however to grow 50% of today's plants that have been introduced since the Dutch syle started back in the 1930s you need a higher tech approach.

Co2 and higher lighting are required for most of the hard to grow plants to look healthy.

To make the red plants even redder higher light is definitely needed this means co2 must be used.

Saying that when i say a Dutch scape, it will be based in a way on the Dutch style but i suppose it will be more of a plant sampler tank as Dutch rules are seriously strict.

Just one rule is one plant species for every 10cm of tank width. So a 120cm tank, should not contain more than 12 species, I'm sure i will have a few more than that :)

This is for fun and learning not for competitions rules, i will probably get pulled by a few people saying that's not a proper Dutch.. well if thats the case then i call it a sampler tank lol.

The reason for the tank is so i can grow as many different types of plants that is possible, hopefully producing almost perfect plants that can then be photographed for our database, that's the plan anyway..

I thought you would like that name.
It will be interesting to see what reaction you receive with that name.

Thanks for the info Jason, have you idea how much PAR you could have at the substrate? Just curious to compare that to my tanks.

Based on the light calculator it's saying 36par so just above low tech values.

I have the 4 bulbs running but dimmed to 50% so i entered 2 bulbs instead of 4 into the calculator.

Adding a light / dimmable % to the calc is a idea for the future :) and also a message saying your light is considered low light / low to medium light / high light etc.

Beautiful. Amazing how well they grow with such low PAR, it really looks low considering the number of bulbs you use... but as you said, I should revise the calculator to allow defining a percentage of dimming. Calculating light and PAR is anyway tough business, too many variables and the result can vary a big deal... it can easily be screwed. You calculated 36 PAR, whereas maybe you might have double than that.

When we released the light calculator, I compared the results with my own tanks, and whereas the results were pretty much right for my low-tech tank, the results for the hi-tech tank were 40%-50% too low... no idea why. So... the results it gives must be taken with a big grain of salt :)

Beautiful Jason, plants look great. Any particular "negative" issues?

    Thanks fab :)

Not really but some of the higher branches are slightly dryer than the others even though I used hygrolon and moss to soak up the moisture.

Problem was solved by moving some plants that preferred that climate, i.e Bromeliads do fine up there, if they are to wet they rot.
