Over the years I found a good stick on was more reliable as you could place it at any level you wanted.
Mine was just above mid level. Only one better the old finger test.

Look, touch & smell free and always ready to use. Its too low tech for the younger generation of today.

I not the only one then, summers easiest, I just fill up several buckets ,tap safe added in morning left in the room of aquarium for a few hours so the temperature is not far off. Winter usually mix a bit of very hot water in each bucket.

Your cold winters possibly requires a little extra attention to water temp. I had more concerns over our very hot summers just keeping the tank temp down. We do not have any A/C.

Tim the wife goes outside to check the Barometers Temp winter and, summer all I do is my finger on the window and never far off.

What about a thermostatic mixing valve? (TMV) - I've put one under my sink and it mixes the water temperature to exactly what I want.
I just run a hose straight from the TMV to my aquarium and add a dechlorinator straight to the tank with the water but treat the whole tank.
Never had a problem so far and I know I'm not the only one to add water straight to the tank.

Thats right Keith and last winter we had the "Beast from the East"bitter east siberian gale force winds and minus freezing temperatures in February the drain off on ours and more central heating systems froze solid.Suprising some of our potted semi hardy plants survived! think at the time I eased back on W/Cs

Sounds like a good method but I only have one CO2 ht tank at present the other two low tech only get a w/c every two or three weeks.

Short update video. I've had some dieback and had to get rid of the moss and trident, both were covered in filamentous algae.

My moss is also covered with filamentous algae - like green felt cushions - from time to time, especially directly under the LED Lights,
and each trident is always eaten by the amanos at record speed

But all in all the rest of the mosses grow well and anyway too much... so it doesn`t matter.

I think that was the problem with my moss, it was under the hotspot of a single point source LED. I've since swapped to a Twinstar 600SA so I have full coverage of diffuse light now, which should stop the problem. There are one or two fragments of moss left, IME it will grow back eventually.

Just a quick iPhone shot post water change and maintenance. The stems at the back are really starting to grow well and colour up a bit more since I swapped out the Radion XR15 FW for a Twinstar 600SA.
